What is Bone Broth?
As the name implies, bone broth is a liquid broth made from boiling animal bones and vegetables. It can be used in soups, sauces, cooking grains, or to drink on its own.
Not only are the ingredients easy to find, but bone broth also promotes sustainability because it is made from animal parts that are often thrown away.
And not only that, bone broth is an inexpensive way to consume necessary nutrients such as protein, collagen, and potassium.
History of Bone Broth
For the last 2,500 years, bone broth has been an important part of the human diet.
In Ancient China, bone broths were used in traditional medicine to support kidney and digestive health.
Medical researchers have confirmed its health benefits, and it continues to be a staple for not only China but Korea, Japan, and many Asian countries.
And since a few years ago, these nutrient-dense broths have started to increase in popularity for their health benefits in the United States as well.
Is There a Difference Between Bone Broth and Stock?
There seems to be a lot of discussion surrounding this answer.
While some people say “yes, definitely,” others argue that bone broth and stock are essentially the same product that has been labeled differently to appeal to a certain audience.
However, while bone broth and stock can be substituted for each other in recipes, there are a few distinct differences between them.
Bone broth, made from bones, is typically simmered longer than stock. This slow-simmering process allows the bones to release more gelatin and more nutrients, creating a thicker consistency in bone broths. When refrigerated, the best bone broth will also turn gelatinous, indicating the high collagen content from the gelatin.
On the other hand, stock, which is also made by boiling bones, isn’t simmered for as long. And as such, it is thinner in consistency and contains less gelatin and nutrients from the bones.
Benefits of Bone Broth
Bone broth is rich in nutrients and minerals which helps to benefit your health and diet. Here are just a few of the benefits that it has to offer:
- Animal bones and marrow have such an amazing amount of nutrition. As such, bone broth provides essential amino acids and important nutrients that we often don’t get enough of in our diet, such as chromium, potassium and magnesium which helps regulate the blood sugar levels in your body.
- Slow cooked meat stocks provide gelatin, which is important for bone health, reducing joint pain, skin and hair.
- Gelatin contains the amino acid glycine and proline, which can help repair your intestinal lining. This makes bone broth incredibly beneficial in healing digestive disorders such as leaky gut syndrome, IBS and acid reflux.
- Bone broth can help boost your immune system, which is so beneficial in the winter months.
- Drinking bone broth can help fight inflammation throughout your entire body because it contains anti-inflammatory properties that will reduce the tenderness that you feel in your body.
- Bone broth can help you lose weight by lowering your overall caloric intake for the day which is great if you’re trying to shed those extra pounds. It’s a good way to fill you up without adding a ton of calories or fat that often comes with most snacks or meals.
- It’s the easiest way to add massive flavors when cooking grains!

Best Shelf-Stable Bone Broth: Kettle & Fire Bone Broth

Kettle & Fire was the first bone broth brand I ever tried.
I’ve tried over 5 of their flavors, and love that they only use natural, organic ingredients (no additives or artificial flavors).
All Kettle & Fire bone broths are made from organic vegetables and bones from grass-fed cows or organic chicken, and a touch of apple cider vinegar.
My favorite flavors have to be the mushroom chicken bone broth and the classic beef bone broth!
The taste is smooth, clean, and satisfying!
Not to mention, it has a two-year expiration date and doesn’t need to be kept refrigerated. I literally always have a few boxes of Kettle & Fire broths stocked in my pantry for a rainy day.
Nutrition per 1 cup serving of Kettle & Fire Beef Bone Broth:
- Calories: 40
- Protein: 10g
- Potassium: 110mg
- Sodium: 330mg
Best Bone Broth Subscription Box: Brodo Bone Broth

Brodo does it differently than the other bone broth brands on this list.
While Brodo does specialize in making delicious bone brothers, it doesn’t sell its bone broths as an individual packet, and you usually don’t find them in stores.
Instead, Brodo sells their bone broths as a frozen multipack in their bone broth subscription boxes.
Brodo offers free delivery, custom bundles, and sampler packs.
Currently, they offer four bone broth flavors, including organic chicken, grass-fed beef, signature hearth, and even a vegan seaweed and mushroom flavor.
I personally love the signature hearth bone broth! It’s a smooth, rich, and savory blend of chicken, turkey, and beef broth. I love warming a cup on a cold day and just drinking it as is. So cozy!
If I had to choose a favorite bone broth on this entire list, it would 100% be Brodo’s Signature Hearth broth.
Brodo uses traditional techniques to create their broths, and the ingredients are 100% real with no preservatives or concentrates. Their bones come from grass-fed and organic animals free of antibiotics and hormones.
These broths pack a punch with their strong, savory flavor.
The only downside? They have to be kept frozen. But let me tell you, it’s totally worth the freezer space.
Nutrition per 1 cup serving of Brodo Bone Broth:
- Calories: 45
- Protein: 9g
- Potassium: 213mg
- Sodium: 350mg
Best Low-Sodium Bone Broth: Osso Good Bone Broths

Osso Good is best known for its “Golden Broth”, and what makes the golden broth unique is also the same reason it’s called ‘golden’.
Osso’s Golden Broth blends turmeric, coconut milk, and ginger to pack even more nutrients into its organic chicken bone broth. It’s a rich, sippable broth with a unique flavor.
But that’s not all that Osso Good has to offer. In fact, they also have other classic flavors like Chicken Bone Broth, Beef Bone Broth, and their Signature Bone Broth – all of which are low-sodium and certified organic.
The brand makes their broths in small batches, and they even offer AIP-compliant broths for individuals with disorders such as GERD or IBD.

- Calories: 60
- Protein: 5.5g
- Potassium: not listed
- Sodium: 90mg
Best Spicy Bone Broth: EPIC Beef Jalapeño Sea Salt Bone Broth

If you’re looking for a little kick in your morning cup of bone broth, EPIC’s Beef Jalapeño Sea Salt Bone Broth is the broth for you.
The broth is peppery, slightly spicy, and so comforting.
Like other broths on this list, EPIC’s beef broths are made with grass-fed beef bones.
Unique to the other brands, however, EPIC’s bone broths also come in beautiful glass jars that can be reused over and over (you know, for days when you make your own bone broth with our homemade recipe below!)
Plus, I love that EPIC’s mission is to restore grasslands, create healthy foods, and fight climate change through all their products.
Not a fan of beef bone broths? Check out their homestyle chicken flavor!

Best Budget Bone Broth: Swanson Bone Broth

Swanson, a subsidiary of Campbell’s, recently added bone broths to their collection of other broths and stocks.
Its ingredient list, while minimal, doesn’t feature animal bones specifically. Instead, the first ingredient is chicken stock.
The flavor isn’t as hearty as the others but is still a good choice if you are on a budget.
Although it doesn’t rank at the top of the list, Swanson Chicken Bone Broth can be found in most grocery stores, making it incredibly accessible.
Nutrition per 1 cup serving of Swanson Chicken Bone Broth:
- Calories: 35
- Protein: 8 g
- Potassium: 400mg
- Sodium: 350mg

What You Need to Make Homemade Bone Broth

How to Make Bone Broth in the Instant Pot
- Into your Instant Pot, add all the ingredients together and mix until combined.
- Press the soup button and set the time to 130 minutes.
- Once done, allow the Instant Pot to release the pressure naturally, then carefully pour the broth through a fine mesh strainer into a large bowl or large pot. Allow the bone broth to cool, then transfer to jars or containers. Refrigerate or freeze until ready to use.
- If you’d like, feel free to scrape off the fat for a leaner broth. You can do this after the bone broth has cooled in the fridge for at least 24 hours. The broth should thicken and the fat will rise to the top for you to discard.
NOTE: You can also use a slow cooker or pressure cooker, but the cooking time will increase.

How to Make Bone Broth Taste Better
If you’ve ever made bland bone broths before, here are a few ways to make it taste better.
The first thing you want to do is add a splash of apple cider vinegar, which will help pull the calcium out from the bones into the liquid.
Next, throw in some fresh vegetables like carrots or celery to give your broth great flavor while also adding nutrients and vitamins to the finished broth!
And finally, don’t forget about aromatics like garlic or onion that will help bring out all those amazing flavors for an even richer tasting bone broth!
For extra flavor, feel free to also add bay leaves!
Can You Freeze Bone Broth?
Yes! I like to make a lot of bone broths in large batches and freeze them. It’s such an easy way to save time.
To freeze bone broth, you can pour the cooled broth into an airtight, freezer-safe container. Make sure to only fill the container 3/4 of the way, as the broth will expand when frozen.
I like to also label the containers with the date I made the bone broth.
As a general rule of thumb, bone broths should last up to three months if prepared and stored correctly.

My sister has told me about Brodo and she loves it! I’ll have to try it myself, or just bite the bullet and try to make my own with the recipe!
