What is Apple Crostata?

A crostata is a round dessert that has a crust formed on the outside by bringing the edges of the dough up and over the filling. Apple crostata has a delicious, warm apple filling inside.

One of my favorite apple crostata has to be Maggiano’s Little Italy Apple Crostada. For those of you who don’t know, Maggiano’s is an Italian restaurant chain with great food, big portions of main course, and an impressive dessert menu!

If you’ve never tried it, you’ve got to order the warm apple crostata next time you visit! While Maggiano’s original recipe is a top secret recipe (obviously), this copycat Maggiano’s apple crostata recipe is very close to the real thing!

What is the difference between a galette and a crostata?

Crostata and Galette are both terms for the same rustic, free-form dessert. You can use either term interchangeably as they both mean the same thing.

How to Make Maggiano’s Apple Crostata

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the sugar mixture ingredients. Set aside.
  2. Pre-heat oven to 400ºF. In a shallow pie dish, roll out the pie crust, leaving about 2 inch of dough on the edges.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together 1/2 cup sugar, salt, and all-purpose flour. Once combined, add in the chopped or sliced apples and stir to combine.
  4. Transfer the apple slices mixture into the prepared pie crust. Distribute the 1 Tbsp butter pieces evenly on top, then fold the edge of crostata dough on top of the apples mixture. You can crimp the edge of dough if you’d like.
  5. Take the prepared sugar mixture and sprinkle it evenly over the entire apple crostada.
  6. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until the crust turns golden brown and the apple filling has softened.
  7. Once done, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzle on some caramel sauce. Maggiano’s Apple Crostata is best served warm. ENJOY!

Can you freeze fruit crostata?

Yes! You can freeze fruit crostata baked or unbaked. It works well with this Maggiano’s Apple Crostata recipe!

How do you freeze an apple crostata?

You can freeze crostata for up to 3 months. Just put the crostata on a baking sheet on parchment paper and freeze it until it is solid. Once frozen, wrap it in plastic wrap and store it in a zip-loc bag!

How do you heat crostata?

If you froze a fully baked crostata, you can let the dessert thaw overnight, and then bake it in the oven again at 325°F oven until warm.

If you froze an unbaked apple crostata, just bake it directly from frozen with a few extra minutes added to the baking time. No need to thaw!

Should crostata be refrigerated?

Most Italian crostata can be kept at room temperature for 2-3 days. Just make sure to cover it with plastic wrap and store it in a cool area.
