What are Taco Bell Cinnamon Twists Made Of?
You may not realize this, but Taco Bell’s famous Cinnamon Twists are actually made out of.. spiral-shaped duritos/duros de harina! If you’ve never heard of it before, duros de harina are a popular Mexican snack made from puffed wheat!
But don’t be fooled – while duros de harina look incredibly similar to a regular pasta (specifically the rotini noodles), it cooks differently! This is because duros de harina are not regular pasta!
In addition to wheat flour, duros de harina have added corn starch, salt, and baking soda in them to help them expand when deep-fried in hot oil. If you use regular rotini pasta, it will NOT expand!
Once your duros are nice and crunchy, all you have to do is to coat them in cinnamon and sugar!
Trust me, making your own Taco Bell’s cinnamon twists is 100% worth it. Not only does it taste just like the real thing, but it’s also a lot cheaper too!
Where Can I Buy Duros de Harina?
Your best bet to find duros de harina is at Mexican markets and specialty stores. However, I’ve also seen them at a regular grocery store like Walmart (especially the bigger ones).
You can also purchase duros de harina at popular online retailers like Amazon!
What You Need to Make Taco Bell Cinnamon Twists
- 1/2 cup dry spiral duros de harina
- 4 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoon cinnamon
- frying oil (vegetable oil, canola oil, or coconut oil)
How to Make Taco Bell Cinnamon Twists
- In a medium plastic bag or bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon until evenly mixed. Set aside.
- Using a deep-fryer or a large pot, heat your frying oil until it’s hot (about 350F on a deep fryer). To see if the oil is hot enough, add a duros de harina to the frying oil. If it starts to puff within 3-4 seconds, then it’s ready.
- Once the oil is hot, add in 10 duros de harina in a single layer and cook until they puff up. Make sure you have enough oil to cover all the duros.
- Remove the cooked duros de harina with a slotted spoon and transfer to a wire rack. I like to put paper towels under the wire rack to keep the oil off my counter.
- Generously sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the cooked duros de harina and you’ve made your own copycat Taco Bell Cinnamon Twists! If you prefer, you can also put in the cinnamon sugar mixture and the cooked duros in a large Ziplock and shake it up!
- This crispy snack is best eaten fresh. ENJOY!
