Can I Make Tri-Tip Sandwiches Ahead of Time?
While freezing assembled tri-tip sandwiches will leave them soggy and not delicious, you absolutely freeze the cooked tri-tip by itself. Just follow the instructions up to the step of slicing the tri-tip, then freeze portions in a freezer-safe bag or wrap it tightly in plastic wrap for up to 3 months.
Alternatively, you can also refrigerate the tri-tip in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
When ready to eat, you can heat the tri-tip in the oven at 325˚F until the beef is heated through. Then you can assemble the tri tip sandwiches fresh.
How to Make Tri Tip Sandwich
- In a small bowl, add salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes. Mix to combine, then dry rub the spice mixture over the tri-tip.
- Wrap the dry-rubbed tri-tip and refrigerate overnight.
- Preheat grill to 400F. Brush with the melted butter, then sear on both sides.
- Lower the grill to 350˚F and generously baste the entire tri-tip with barbeque sauce. Close grill lid and cook for 25-30 minutes (to your preferred doneness), flipping every 5 minutes.
- Once done, turn off the grill and transfer the meat to a cutting board too cool for 5 minutes, then slice the tri-tip into thin slices, about 1/3 inch thick.
- Assemble the tri-tip sandwich by generously spreading garlic butter on your grilled crusty bread. Stuff the slices of tri tip on each sandwich and slather extra barbeque sauce. ENJOY!
