What is Traditional Shepherd’s Pie Made Of?

This classic shepherd’s pie is a rich and hearty dish made with ground lamb topped with creamy mashed potatoes. Over the years, however, people have started to use ground beef instead of ground lamb too – and some recipes even mix them together!

What You Need to Make No Bake Shepherd’s Pie (Stovetop)

  • 4 cups mashed potato
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground lamb)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons parsley
  • 3/4 teaspoon rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup frozen mixed peas, corn, and carrots
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • shredded cheese

What Can I Use Instead of Flour in Shepherd’s Pie?

Instead of flour, you can use cornstarch to thicken the filling.

Why Does Shepherds Pie Have No Pastry?

In Scotland, Shepherd’s Pies were originally baked in pastry crusts. But when it came to Ireland, the recipe was tweaked when they found themselves with an abundant harvest of potatoes. So out went the pastry and in goes the creamy mashed potato topping you likely are more familiar with.

How to Make No Bake Shepherd’s Pie (Stovetop)

  1. Into a large skillet, add olive oil on medium-high heat and add the onions and garlic. Sauté until onions are transluscent and garlic is fragrant, about 3-5 minutes.
  2. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Mix in the spices, then stir everything together until combined and cook until the meat is browned.
  3. Mix in the Worcestershire sauce, flour, and tomato paste, then the beef broth, and frozen vegetables. Mix well, allow the mixture to come to a boil, then reduce heat to low to simmer until the vegetables are softened.
  4. Mix in the sour cream, then spread the cooked mashed potatoes over the top. Sprinkle cheese on top, then cover the skillet with the lid and cook on medium heat until the mashed potatoes are fully heated through and the cheese is deliciously melted. ENJOY!
