Side note: Eating this Kerala beef curry makes me think of a similar Indonesian beef dish called Rendang Sapi that I grew up eating! Though of course, each one has its own distinct flavor profiles 🙂

What You Need to Make Authentic Kerala Beef Curry

  • 2 lb beef, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 3 onion, chopped
  • 3 tomatoes, diced
  • 1 green chili, sliced
  • 8 clove garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece ginger, minced
  • A small handful of curry leaves
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala (I recommend this one)
  • 1 cup water
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

How to Make Beef Curry ( Kerala Thattukada Style)

  1. Heat coconut oil in a pressure cooker (or Instant Pot) over medium heat. Add in onion and salt. Cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add tomatoes and green chili. Saute until the tomatoes become soft and juicy. Then add in garlic, ginger, and curry leaves and cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes.
  3. Add in the beef, followed by chili powder, coriander powder, black pepper, and garam masala. Mix well to combine. Add in water.
  4. Close the lid of the pressure cooker and cook for 20 to 30 minutes (4 to 6 whistles) or until beef is thoroughly cooked through. Allow the pressure to release completely before opening the pressure cooker.
  5. Serve the Kerala beef curry with warm Basmati rice or homemade roti. ENJOY!
