What is Sweet Potato Pone?

Pones are a popular Southern dish reminiscent of a pudding and a cake. While typically made with corn, pones can also be made with other root vegetables, such as in this sweet potato pone recipe.

Traditionally, the pone is cooked in a round skillet that’s either fried over the fire, or baked in the oven. It’s considered soul food!

In this recipe, we will be baking the sweet potato pone, and you are free to use a square baking dish if you don’t have a round dish.

What You Need to Make Sweet Potato Pone

Ingredients

  • 1 pound sweet potato, grated or mashed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1⁄2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1⁄4 cup butter
  • 1⁄2 cup milk
  • 1⁄4 cup molasses, sub maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 lemon, zested

How to Make Sweet Potato Pone

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease an 8×8 baking dish with butter. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, add the butter and sugar. Cream until well-combined, then stir in the eggs. Add the sweet potatoes, milk, molasses, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon zest.
  3. Pour the pone mixture into the prepared baking dish and top with brown sugar.
  4. Bake until pone is set, about 55-65 minutes. Allow the pone to cool, then slice into pieces (I like to slice mine into squares). ENJOY!

Un-Traditional Variations

If you know me, you absolutely know that I am all for fusion recipes! While this sweet potato pone recipe is incredible on its own, I sometimes like to add some un-traditional mix-ins to this recipe! Here are a few suggestions I recommend:

  • Chopped Medjool Dates
  • Raisins
  • Coconut Flakes
  • Chocolate Chips
  • …and more!
