What You Need to Make Pineapple BBQ Sauce
For the Cornstarch Slurry
- 1 Tablespoons water
- 1 Tablespoons cornstarch
For the Pineapple Barbecue Sauce
- 1 cup pineapple juice
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup chili sauce
- 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- salt, to taste
A note about the pineapple juice: I usually just buy pre-made pineapple juice to save time, but you can absolutely make your own using a fresh pineapple for the best taste (or canned pineapples work too!)
How to Make Pineapple BBQ Sauce
- In a small bowl, whisk together the water and corn starch to form a slurry. Set aside.
- Into a medium pot, add the pineapple juice, ketchup, chili sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder. Mix together until combined, then heat on medium heat until slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. Turn off the heat, then whisk in the slurry until well-dissolved.
- Transfer the pineapple BBQ sauce into an airtight glass jar or sealed container and let cool. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use. ENJOY!
Variations for Pineapple Barbecue Sauce
Here are some of my favorite ways to change up this recipe to make your own bbq sauce!
- Add 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Add 1/2 teaspoon tomato paste
- Add cayenne pepper for next level spiciness (if you like spicy foods)
- Add 2-4 Tablespoons light brown sugar for more sweetness
- Add a small knob of fresh ginger during cooking – a little goes a long way! remove before whisking the slurry.
- Add extra pineapple chunks for a more intense version of your own hawaiian bbq sauce
- Feeling adventurous? Add a splash of soy sauce for a different take on this tangy sauce. It’s oddly the perfect combination!
