What Do Caramel Lattes Taste Like?
Caramel lattes are similar to regular vanilla lattes, except they have a richer, more complex flavor. The addition of caramel to the latte gives it a sweet and creamy taste that will leave you wanting more.
This 5-minute Starbucks caramel latte recipe is a fantastic copycat recipe of the version served at this popular coffee chain.
What’s the Difference Between Starbucks Caramel Latte and Caramel Macchiato?
The Starbucks Caramel Latte is a coffee-based drink with added caramel flavoring and milk, while the Caramel Macchiato is espresso with added milk and caramel. The latte is also heavier on the milk while the macchiato has more of a “shot” taste to it.

What You Need to Make Caramel Latte Starbucks
- Brewed coffee – freshly brewed strong coffee is best, like this but you can also use premium instant coffee in a pinch
- Milk – use whole milk, skim milk, or nondairy milk (like soy milk or oat milk)
- Sugar – this latte was meant to be a sweet drink, so we are adding a bit of sugar. You can use brown sugar, coconut sugar, regular sugar, or feel free to omit or swap with extra caramel if you’d like too.
- Heavy cream – adds extra creaminess. You can swap this with full-fat coconut milk if vegan or omit completely for a less creamy latte
- Caramel sauce – we can’t have Caramel Latte without the caramel, can we? The sauce gives this drink that luscious caramel flavor.
Optional:
- Whipped cream
- Extra drizzle of caramel sauce
- Vanilla syrup – if you’re not a caramel latte purist, try mixing latte flavors for a delicious combination!
What’s the Difference Between Caramel Syrup and Caramel Sauce?
Caramel syrup is a thick, sugary liquid made by heating sugar until it liquefies and turns a deep amber color (get the copycat recipe for Starbucks’ caramel syrup HERE).
Caramel sauce is a thicker version of caramel syrup that contains milk, cream, or butter for a richer flavor and texture. Most Starbucks coffee lattes, macchiatos, frappuccinos, mochas, and cappuccinos use caramel sauce.
How to Make Caramel Latte Starbucks
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk, caramel, sugar, and heavy cream on medium heat. Whisk the mixture until combined and milk starts to steam. Optionally, you can use a milk frother to froth the mixture.
- Pour your brewed coffee into 2 medium mugs, then stir in the caramel milk mixture. If using, add your extra vanilla syrup now (optional). Then add a large dollop of whipped cream on top along with an extra caramel drizzle. ENJOY!
How Many Pumps of Caramel are in Starbucks’ Caramel Latte?
If you order a caramel latter from Starbucks, you’ll typically get about three to five pumps of caramel, depending on the size of your drink. Each pump is about 1/2 tablespoon, and this recipe calls for 2 tablespoon of caramel + extra drizzle on top/
Can I Make Vegan Starbucks Caramel Latte?
Yes! Just swap the heavy cream with full-fat coconut milk, use non dairy milk, and make sure to use vegan caramel sauce.
