I’ve always been a fan of french toast ever since I can remember. But when I tried sourdough french toast for the first time last year at a cute cafe in Texas, it was a complete game-changer.
The sourdough bread gave the french toast a nice crusty texture and the signature sourdough flavor that I love. So when I came back to Kansas City, I knew I had to recreate the sourdough french toast recipe!
If you’ve never had sourdough french toast, you need to try it. It will change your mind about french toast forever.
Can You Make Sourdough French Toast from Scratch?
Yes! While I’m not experienced enough with sourdough starters to make the bread from scratch. In theory, you could bake your own sourdough bread and turn it into this sourdough french toast!
For this recipe, however, I’ll be using store-bought sourdough bread 🙂

- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoon brown sugar

How to Make Sourdough French Toast

- While waiting for the butter to melt, take a slice of sourdough bread and dip it in the bowl, making sure to coat both sides.
- Place the soaked bread on the hot griddle or pan and cook until golden brown. Flip and repeat with the other side.
- Repeat step 2-3 with the remaining slices of sourdough bread. Once done, serve your sourdough french toast warm with an extra pat of butter, maple syrup (or this Homemade Vegan Apple Honey), berries, and other delicious toppings of your choice! ENJOY!
Can You Make French Toast Ahead of Time?
Yes, you can make french toast ahead of time (though it tastes the absolute best when fresh).
Place the bread slices in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze for about 2 hours, or until solid. Then, place the frozen bread slices in a resealable bag.
When you’re ready to make French toast, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Place the frozen bread slices on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes, or until the french toasts are thawed and golden.
